The 676832R1 retaining ring for the IH 500C and 500E steering clutch base plates used to be available through CNH but that is no longer an easy acquisition. One of our customers, contributed his research on how to solve the problem. C Holland graciously shared his solution with us and gave permission to share his work to others. "I bought a Century Spring p/n 3108, which has an OD of 1.906 and a wire diameter of .067. Cut one of the end loops off so about a 1/4 gap. The filed the ends on 45° angle to aid removal from the groove if ever needed. Fits perfectly in the .070 wide groove that's machined to 1.875 in the new clutch backing plate. It's a short spring, and you can get three rings out of a single spring. So there you have it, an alternate to the IHC p/n.
